Ok. I have a picture of my old hard drive that is giving me bootable device errors. It looks pretty bad to me. I was going to go through all the trouble to get a boot disc for this computer. Even if I get a new hard drive I will need one. Is this hard drive completely shot or will a boot disc have a chance at fixing this hard drive? If so is there anything I can do without a boot disc to check whether or not it is working?

I can't tell from the photos what is wrong with it.

In addition to a boot disc or Linux live CD, you could get a satay to USB cable and try using it as an external drive on another computer. You can get external drive enclosures as a well that basically let you drop a hard drive into it and connect it as an external drive to another computer.
