If you've ever uploaded a video to YouTube from your iPhone that you took in portrait mode- you've noticed.

The video uploads as a tall video. It's widescreen by no-means, basically it uploads in a portrait orientation.

What causes that? Has anyone found that weird and peculiar?

it loads that way because you recorded it that way.

if you want nicer videos on youtube, you gotta learn how to shoot better. [ie better lighting, holding the camera steady, recording in landscape mode, etc]

there ARE ways to make portrait videos look nice through editing though. like putting 2 portrait videos side by side, or putting a title over it that extends into the black parts.

It uploads as a "tall video" because that's what it is--look at the iPhone screen while recording in portrait mode and ask yourself if you've ever seen a movie screen that shape. The only way to get the full video to show in a "normal" video window is to shrink it down to fit in the middle of the window.

Edit: you could also consider editing your video after shooting in portrait. Some apps (iMovie for example) automatically crop portrait video into a square to avoid the issue we're talking about.
