WinSCP Not Working for iPhone 3G

I just jailbroke my device, and I'm really happy with it, except I'm a total idiot when it comes to technical stuff. I bought a new iPhone and I was wanting to use my old iPhone 3G for an iPod, except I get tired of seeing the "No Service" at the top, and would like to delete it altogether, or change it to something else. I am really confused. I downloaded OpenSSH from Cydia, and I downloaded WinSCP from the internet. When I put in everything correctly, and use the username "root" and password "alpine" and enter my IP address, I click login and it just closes and doesn't do anything. I try it again, nothing. Is there a way someone could explain this to me? I have an iPhone 3G running iOS 4.2.1 jailbroken.

are you opposed to using a USB connection method?

Sorry, it told me that Win7 x64 is not supported. I have an older windows XP computer, would that work?
