Will Apple retail stores likely have decent iPhone stock in the days after launch even though ship times remain weeks long? In years past, it seemed that online ship times were generally long, but a few days after launch iPhone availability improved at Apple retail stores.

It does seem like waiting for a few days after launch and going to an Apple retail store would be better than trying to purchase online at this point. Does Apple also usually have a online availability checker?

No. Those "availability checkers" that were prevalent last year involved accessing Apple internal data. Apple shut them down. Use the website and/or the app.

Even if you manage to find a tracker or get ahold of a store that has the device in Stock, you better race to the gates to get it. They are likely to sell as soon as inventory restocks. Especially if you live in a high demand area like a NY or so. But they usually have a higher stock of units since it's a such a large market

Currently you can still reserve an iPhone 6 for in store pick up here in Toronto. The iPhone 6 pus however is showing unavailable for in store pickup.
