Seeing as the new iPad has the same dimensions as the original iPad Air, does anyone know if the cases designed for the Air will fit the new iPad? Are the various ports microphones switches buttons speakers and camera in the exact same place?

Great question. I'm guessing that iPad Air cases might fit but some Air 2 cases could be too slim. Perhaps someone who has looked more deeply into the subject will post a better response. :)

Not really. While it is the same physical dimensions as the iPad Air 1, the cutouts are slightly different

Great question. I'm sure lots are wondering the same thing. The overall answer is Maybe..

While the actual height and width is the same. The thickness is quite different (7.5mm vs 6.1mm) So if you purchased a case thats very tight fitting it might not work. The volume rockers are also a little further apart (picture below) so some cases might not push the keys correctly. So i would say, if you have a case, give it a try but probably get an official iPad (2017) case :)

Also, forgot to mention, the Microphone holes have also been moved from around the camera module to the top of the device.(this won't affect the case fitting but might affect video recording or phone calls ect. (Picture Below) :) Hope this helps!

On the bright side, my iPad Air Apple Smart Cover fits my 2017 iPad just fine. I saw Apple sells 2017 iPad-specific Smart Covers and thought maybe they changed something enough where the older Smart Cover wouldn't attach or function properly.
