Why won't iMessage let me into preferences on my laptop

I followed the instructions on this website for activating iMessage on my laptop, however, when I clicked on iMessage and tried to go to "preferences" the word is "grayed out" and I cannot access it. Seems there is some kind of internal error?

Which version of the message app are you using? I have version 9.1
What about quitting completely the application and lunch it back again?
What about rebooting the computer and lunching it back?
You can also try to add your iMessage account via "system preference> internet account/
If those are not solving it, check if there is any update of the application pending via the App Store.
