iTunes drive not recognized after computer sleeps

Every time I wake my computer from sleep in OS X Yosemite, I get a ton of warnings that I did not disconnect the drive properly. Even though all the drives are still plugged in and active, the connection to iTunes is lost and I need to reset that connection in preferences.

Is there a way to not have to do that?

Check with the maker of the external drive for the latest drivers for Mac, install them.
