Why isn't my iPhone receiving updates?

iPhone nor receiving updates,

I have had my iPhone 4S for about five months. Before that it was my aunt's for almost three years and it's in perfect condition, however I am not receiving any software updates. I updated it when I first got the phone, five months ago, I am not sure what I updated it from but I updated it to iOS 7. 1. 2 and now five months later it is still the same and my iPad 2 has around iOS 8. 1. 3 or something around that. So I want to know how to update my iPhone,

Are you saying when your go to Settings > General > Software Update it does not show an update available?
