Why isn't my Air Drop option available when I swipe?

Deny can't I get air drop on my ipad

Bluetooth and wifi are enabled. Air drop option is not available when I swipe bottom of pad

It can be finicky. In my experience, both devices must be "awake". My biggest issue is going from iPhone to rMBP. I have to make sure that I have the screens on both devices unlocked and opened. Usually I can get it to work, but there have been a few frustrating attempts failures.
