1. Is it still on?
2. Has the battery been depleted?
3. When you press the home button, does the screen light up?
4. Have you tried charging it for about an hour?
5. If the battery has not been depleted, press both the power and home buttons until you see the Apple logo and then release both buttons.
6. If all of the above still doesn't help, make a Genius Bar appointment with the nearest Apple Store to have them diagnose the problem for you.

The answers Just Me, D gave are spot on and you can also try and resync the screen by:
Going into settings and slide the bar all the way to dark and turn off the switch. Now go into a dark room and toggle on the switch back on, Then turn the light in the room back on and you should see the bar move to go back to where the sensor is picking up the proper light re syncing the screen light. If that works you are good and if not then do as told above.
