My mail app icon was working fine. Now it suddenly stopped working. When I tap the icon, only a blank blue screen comes up.

I don't know, but you can try any or all of the following:
1. Reboot your iPhone.
2. Go to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars setting, delete the mail account(s), and then re-configure them on the device.
3. If you're using a 3rd-party Mail app, delete it and then re-install it.
4. Reset all settings.
