Strange Random Alert Sound

My new iPhone6, this is my first iPhone, a few times per day plays an alert sound that is nowhere on the menus. It sounds like:
Dit Dit Da Da - Dit Da - Dit Dit - Dit and plays it twice in two tones. The da is a higher pitch tone. It almost sounds like a news alert sound. I know, in Morse Code it spells W-A-I-E. I'm an old HAM. Maybe that's a clue.

Re: Strange Random Alert Sound

That sounds like the tri-tone alert sound. Go to Settings and find tri-tone in the alert sounds list and see if that's it. Many apps use that alert sound. If you have all other notifications turned off for an app except for the sound, you will hear it but not see anything. Many of us have been through this. I heard that ghost alert for months before I finally found a forum app that had the sound turned on but no other notification. This is what it would look like:

As you can see, everything is turned off except "sound".
You might also check the apps in the bottom under "Do Not Include". Those can still be enabled for sound notifications. Go to Settings >Notifications >Go down your app list and check every single app and make sure "sound" is turned off.
