Why is my iPad leaving the page I'm on and going back to the icon desktop?

This happens frequently. For example, I'll be on Facebook scrolling down the page and the screen will jump to the desktop. When I hit Facebook icon on the desktop it will take me right back to the place I was at but starts loading back at the top of the page. Or in the middle of a video does the same. My battery seems to be fine. Charges fine. The iPad does not seem to be damaged appearance wise. My mother had it and gave it to me. I registered it with apple and gave it a try. I don't really use the keyboard. I use a pen. I just can't figure out why it keeps booting me back to the icon screen. Can you help me please. Frustrated. Oh yeah I use this iPad in wifi mode. My girlfriend has a laptop and we use the same router.
