If it goes back to the home screen suddenly, that sounds like an app crashing

Hi, welcome to IMore, if you haven't already, try closing some apps and reboot the device by holding the power button and home button till you see the Apple logo.
If it's only one app causing it. Try closing the app, delete it, reboot, then reinstall the app.

Is it only certain apps doing this? If so, look in the app store and see if there are updates available for those apps (especially if you haven't checked app updates in a long time). The other tips above help as well.
