Why is Instagram sending false notifications to my friend?

My friend received a notification saying that I was following a person that I don't follow: 'user X and user Y are following person Y on Instagram'

I followed this person for some time, but not anymore since +/- 1 year.

So I'm wondering, does anybody know how this is possible? Did someone also experience false notifications from Instagram?

I already contacted them, but unfortunately the chances of getting a supply are really small. Thanks for your input anyways!
