why I can't find my old photos on Iphone 5 after upgrading to ios 8

It is my I phone 5, after I upgrade to IOS 8, I can't find some very important photos that I took and kept on the phone ! I tried to search for it but to no result...does that mean I lost the photos for good!? or, there is something I dido not know when I upgraded to the new IOS8...

Do they come up when you click shared, the cloud button in photos?
