Why don't I have a trash can icon in iPhoto moments on my iPad Air?

No trash can icon in iPhoto "moments" on my iPad Air

Hi, Followed your directions for deleting photos on my iPad Air. After choosing "select " by the group of photos I want to select, no trash can icon appears. Also can you selectively delete photos within a group of photos (ex: several that are similar)?
To date, I have been aunable to delete photos from a file of over 3,000.

When you hit select you have to choose the pics you want to delete or hit select all, then the trashcan appears
