I have an iPhone 5C running IOS 10.2.1.

I have built an home intruder alarm system that emails my phone when the alarm is tripped but the sound notification only works when I manually open up Mail . The email is sent from a Gmail server.

I want the phone to notify me 24/7 including when the screen is locked and / or the phone is in sleep mode (NOT do not disturb which is switched off)

Go to the Sound and Notifications Settings and verify that a notifications alert and tone is set for the Mail/Gmail app.

Go to settings > Mail > Accounts > scroll down to Fetch new mail> scroll down and set fetch to 15 minutes. If you want push notifications for Gmail, get the Gmail app.

Gmail push no longer possible (and hasn't been for some years) probably due to the rivalries. Gmail best way to go. I use type app personally and I believe it offers push for Gmail!
