Why doesn't the Pay model work for websites?

In episode 84 of the Vector podcast Rene Richey says the pay model doesn't work for websites. I disagree. I would love to pay for the content of my favorite websites and skip the ads. Unfortunately the pay websites I have visited want $1, or more, per article. I know they are only receiving pennies from the advertisers. So I feel as though the pay websites are taking advantage of the people who want to pay vs those who view with advertisements. If there was a way to view content, and pay a fair price, I would do it.

That is an excellent tip. Unfortunately the iMore website only lists 74 episodes for the Vector podcast while the Apple Store lists 84! Very confusing.
