why does the ipad dc from wifi network?

The darn thing is getting a signal, it shows the available networks.

This has been an issue just for today, after months of fine behaviour.

Turning it off and then on is a temporary fix, but is there a more elegant solution?

Tried: turn airplane mode on then off - fail

It's not the iPad, your network is borked - no, everything else connects and stays connected fine.

Did you try tapping "Forget this Network" and then connecting back to that network?

That may solve your issue.
