Why does my sound stop working after using mute switch on iPhone 6?

Sounds stop working after using mute switch on iPhone 6

After using the mute switch on my iPhone 6, (I've switched it back to the un-muted position) nearly all the sounds stop working.

The ringer works normally, but, text, email, key click, lock screen, etc all stop working and do not produce any sounds until I reboot the phone.

This happens every time I use the mute switch to silence the phone for those times that I need to do so.

I am on 8.1.2 and am on Sprint iPhone 6.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What gets it working again? Has a reboot fixed it?
