Why does my screen turn on while on a call?

Screen turns on while on call

Using 5s IOS9. If any sms or news from internet or whatsapp etc comes while I am talking on phone, the screen turns on automatically and does not go off for sometime. As a result, often my cheek turns on the speaker or the mute button. This is happening since IOS8 or maybe earlier. No other issues with proximity sensor. But is really irritating

Hhhhmmm....I would WANT for the screen to come on when there is notification, that's the whole idea.

As far as your cheek turning on the speaker, toggle to hide the screen.
