Why does my phone not ring when I'm doing something else on phone

My iPhone 5s always goes to answer phone if I'm playing games, reading or anything else. It only rings if I'm not on phone so I've missed several calls. Why??

If 'Alert' is enabled in the phone settings, an incoming call prompt will display on the screen and interfere with whatever you're currently doing on the phone so go to Settings - Notifications - Phone and make sure that "Alerts" is selected under "ALERT STYLE WHEN UNLOCKED".

I have an iPhone 8 Plus I have updated it recently and when I am in Facebook and other areas on my phone I don’t hear the phone ring on certain phone calls . I just upgraded to this phone last week . Please help . I have checked all the settings over and over. It doesn’t do this to all the phone calls . But when It doesn’t ring I notice at top banner I have a voice mail.
