You need one for connection to a cellular network.

Also, if you already have one inserted and the device is not recognizing it, get with your wireless carrier and get it replaced.

Looks like you dropped your phone and your SIM card is slightly moved.

Just take the SIM card out, scrub it on your pants to clean any smudge and reinsert it in the phone. It should work as before.
