Why do shared reminders sometimes not show up?

My wife and I have been sharing reminders for quite a while, but we find them unreliable. She'll sometimes add to our "Groceries" list so I know what to get on my way home from work, but they'll not be there when I check.

Is there a way to "push" reminders on a shared list?

Normally, the changes are applied quickly, but there are times when they are not. The problem could lie on Apple's end, your wireless carrier's end or you may simply need to restart your devices or reset the network settings.
