Why do my contact photos not appear in the photo bubble to the left of the contacts name?

I just updated m iphone 6 with ios 9.0.1

Try going to Settings/Messages and see towards the top if there's a toggle for "show contact photos"

The Settings > Messages > Show Contact Photos option is not available prior to iOS 9.1 beta.
