Why do I get the error message on my iPad that the connection to server has failed?

I cannot receive mail on my Ipad. says connection to server has failed.

everything on my Ipad works except receiving mail. Has been working up until now

Try rebooting your iPad or deleting the email account and then reconfiguring it.
