Why did my ipad stop sending and receiving imessages

My ipad just stopped sending and receiving imessages...i can send message as a text but i dont get my response back to ipad...it will however come back as imessage on my iphone...i have no trouble sending or receiving messages on ipad taht are not from an iphone....i havent changed any settings.....i have the latest updates for both devices,,,any idea what could have happened? Thanks
