Why can't messages be opened on the iPad after updating to iOS 8.1?

Since the 8.1 update on my hubby,s I pad he can't open his messages or use face time it asks for his password he enters it then it says network error

Try rebooting the iPad by holding the home & power buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears. This usually fixes those quirky issues.
