Why can't iPhone playback 60fps mp4 videos?

The iPhone 7+ with iOS 10.3.3 can shoot video in 1080 HD at 60fps, and play it back. My new camera can also shoot video in 1080 HD at 60fps (1080i, specifically), but these videos do NOT play on my iPhone. iTunes refuses to copy them over.

Same camera, set to record at 1080p at 30fps, no problem.

Both videos are in mp4 format.

I do not know the answer to either question. The only reason I know the camera generated format is because it tells me in the settings. And the camera is newer (both in ownership and in when the model was released). I was, perhaps incorrectly, assuming that since both devices are saying 1080 at both 30fps and 60fps that the file formatting would be the same for each device.

Theres progressive (1080p) and interlaced 1080i).... ignore the numbers, we're only looking at the letters. I don't think the 7 supports interlaced. On the tech specs page for the 7 it only says progressive as being supported. Interlaced is not mentioned.

It could be possible that Apple does not support interlaced at all, but I'd have to research to know for sure. You can always do a search to see if you can use a converter and convert an interlaced video to progressive.

Thank you. Guess that means I won't get as smooth video out of the camera, since I want to be able to transfer them to the iPhone.

OTOH, 60fps vs 30fps. 60 is smoother. Hence the "oh well"

Thanks for the clarification. :)

It depends on what type pf vid you're making. 24 fps is good for making softer videos (like what you see at the movies). 30 fps is good for tv style videos (you get a crisper video). 60 fps is indeed smoother (and when making slow motion video is better to use), but make sure you're not giving up resolution flexibility.
