Why can't I update my 4s?

Can't update my 4s Problem: phone is now not working.

Details: screen on phone: iTune symbol(3/4 up the screen), then an arrow up symbol the the power cord symbol( the part you connect to the phone. Updated failed. I have no idea how to get the phone back in working order. I have had nothing but issues with this phone since I purchased it. This may be my first and last time I purchase an iPhone.

It's in recovery mode... Connect to iTunes.
