Why can't I send text messages to some of my contacts?

There are a few of my contacts that I cannot text. Cannot send message I message needs to be enabled comes up for them. Why?

I had that problem as well. I currently switch sims between an iPhone 6 and an Android phone. I don't use iMessage because it's just easier not to enable/disable it every time I switch. The way I fixed it is to delete all message threads. Do a hard reset (hold home and power button at the same time til it powers off then back on). After it powers back on before attempting to text anybody go into messaging under settings and make sure iMessage is disabled. If that doesn't work, go into contacts and make sure that the contacts are saved as "mobile" instead of "iPhone".

did they have a iphone and switch ?

They may need to un register there phone number

Do they have iPhones, iPads, iPod Touch devices or Macs? If so, do they have iMessage enabled on their devices?
