Why can't I send iMessages from iPad to a friend's iPhone?

Can't send iMessage from iPad to friend's iphone

I can email and call my friend on her iPhone but can't send her an iMessage. I can iMessage other people from my iPad. I have tried using her phone number and hotmail address but both appear in red when I type them into the address. My son can send her an iMessage from his iPhone no problem. Is the problem occurring because I am using an iPad? What is the solution? Help please.

She has to be using iMessage... if she's not - she can only use standard SMS text messaging... if you set up your iPad correctly - you can send standard SMS text messages via your iPhone... https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201349
