Why can't I get on the internet while talking on the phone?

I have an iPhone 5 and can't get on the Internet while talking on the phone. I can send messages while on the phone but not pictures. Nor can I iMessage during a call. I have to send it as a regular message and I can't receive iMessages during a call. Is there some way I can change this in settings?

If your carrier does not support simultaneous text and talk or you aren't connected to a Wi-Fi network at the time then the answer is no.

Only certain carriers support simultaneous voice and data, so depending on who your carrier is you may not have that option.
