Why can't I find some of the contacts on my iPhone?

i can not find some of the contacts on my iphone

i have had an iphone 5 for some years now. i have saved several contacts on the phone at different times. however, i removed my sim card last week and replaced it to find that all my contacts had disappeared.

Have you tried to restore them from a backup?
