Why can't I clear my safari history on my iPad?

I tried to clear it after reading but it was grey,I tried playing around in the settings and that didn't do anything,I shut my iPad down and that didn't do anything either. Plus the thing in the settings to clear the Safari history is grey as well. What could I do to fix this?
