why can I text people on Whatsapp yet I cant phone them?

recently downloaded Whatsapp on my iphone,I can send messages to friends on Whatsapp but I cant phone them, Why?

Do you have phone service? If you have limited voice minutes, have you reached your limit? Having said that, if you're asking why you can't make a phone call using the WhatsApp app, it is my understanding that it is a real-time messaging app and not a voice call service.
