my volume buttons on my iPhone 4s are not responding when i press the up or down button?

The up or down volume buttons on the side of my iPhone 4s are not working when i press them. What could be the reason causing this?

Are they not working at all, or just with certain sound adjustments? If they are not working at all, you probably need to take it to the Apple Store. However, if they are working on some adjustments, make sure you try restarting your phone and/or check Settings > Sounds.
