Why are recent text messages showing up?

Why are text message recents showing up

I generally delete texts when the thread is complete. I noticed, after updating to ios8, that those recent texts are showing up behind desktop. In other words, double click main menu button and the recents are listed. How do I delete these all together?

1. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars
2. Scroll down to the Contacts section
3. Show in App Switcher > Phone Favorites > [OFF]
4. Show in App Switcher > Recents > [OFF]
