Why an E in the top left corner?

Was out on the road, tried to use my phone and there was an E in the top left corner? And no service? Help me please.

E stands for Edge, it's the 2G network for AT&T and T-Mobile. You have service, however your data speeds are essentially non existent. You can make phone calls and that's about it. That is until you get back to an area with a stronger network connection.

I see this all the time when roaming in the US with Knowroaming. They use T-Mobile and the coverage in some areas is abysmal...
