I am getting little or no volume when I play back the video.

I am using the video on I phone 5

Try plugging in a pair of headphones and play the video. Do you have sound? Now unplug your headphones. Does the speaker work now? I had a similar situation, and that fixed it on my iPad Air 2.

Make sure the hole between the camera and the flash isn't clogged. I helped someone with the same issue and there was what appeared to be chocolate stuck in there. A toothpick did wonders.

That hole is used for audio during a video recording and recording playback.
