Which used iPhone should I get?

I want to buy an iPhone. I have an iPad mini with retina and love it. I am hoping to buy an older used iPhone due to cost, but I want to make sure the phone will not feel extremely outdated compared to my iPad.
I'm on a strict budget, so should I go for an iPhone 4s or 5? If I really push my budget, I could go for a 5s, but only if it would really make a huge difference in performance.

Thanks

I would say to get the most recent model that you can afford. As was mentioned that gets you updates for a little longer. The 5s is still a really good phone too.

Of the ones you mentioned I would spring for at least the 5s. That will give you a bit of wiggle room before the device is extremely under powered.

any of them should work for most things, but if you play games the 5s will probably suit best.

As an earlier poster said, get the most recent model you can afford.

For what it's worth, my 5s still runs as well as it always has.

I'm currently using a 5S and there is no difference between an iPhone 6 and 5S in the performance and speed. Camera, screen and other things are quite better in the 6 though. So get an iphone 5S if you can.
