Which should I buy? iPad Air or the iPad Mini Retina

I'm a college student looking to buy and iPad, but I'm stuck on which to go with. I already own a MBPr and an iPhone 5. I'm looking for something to keep me from having to walk around campus with my laptop because it does get pretty heavy with my books in my backpack. I really want something I can do a lot of typing/writing and a lot of reading on. Which do you think I should get?

You can do a lot of typing, writing and reading on either device, but it will depend on how comfortable it will be for YOU. Personally, I'd go with the Mini based on what you stated. It's smaller, easier to the on and can probably fit in a pant pocket.
