What type of unit do I need to do backup on Mac BookPro devices?

We want to backup file so if something goes wrong the computer we don't loose important information or documents etc.

You could always back up to flash drive or a bootable external/internal drive(this you would swap out in an upgrade). Also, don't forget you could always recover from the recovery partition from OS X
