What problems will I encounter if I have different iOS versions on my different devices?

My iPod will only advance up to iOS 6.1.6.
I have two iPads, used for different purposes, and only want to update iOS version on one, since I may loose some (older) app compatibility if I update both iPads.

If I update iOS on only one iPad, will they still be able to communicate with each other?

Yes, you should not be having any issues.

What exactly is your question? With that I mean, what apps or services on those iPads are imperative for you?

It took some time to find this answer box. I guess it hadn't loaded before when I needed it, so I looked all around the site to respond to Tartarus answer...

I guess that for any app I have on my iPad, I can look up the info on it to see if it will work with a newer iOS version.

But my biggest concern is that I won't be able to share info pertaining to calendar entries, notes, and contacts among the iPads I have, if the two iPads don't have the same iOS version. I read that some iPad users are unhappy that they cannot revert back to older iOS versions if they want or need to do that. I hesitate to update my iOS version if it means I am burning my bridges behind me.

But who should I ask about iPad info sharing (like I described above)?

I would think if they both had the same iCloud account than you should be able to share info between them. I don't think it has anything to do with what iOS version they are on. Also you could always go ask them at the Genius Bar but they might tell you to just put the iOS up to date or buy a newer device.

Regardless of the iOS version, if iCloud was supported back then on that iOS version, it will still be supported now and you should be able to sync back and forth on all your devices to those services.

Don't overthink this kind of stuff. It works just fine, no matter what version it is.
