Were you updating an app or something when the icon appeared. If so, it could mean that the app was corrupted or incomplete. Delete the app and re-download it. If that was not what you were doing when the icon appeared, please update us with more detail.

Sounds like it's the GPS icon. Bring up your control center and see if GPS is turned on. It may even be an app currently using location services.
