What is IMAP and why is the server not responding?

My iPhone 5 is not receiving my yahoo email is I installed the updated this morning. It gives the message the (IMAP server"apple.imap.mail.yahoo.com is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the "Incoming Mail Server" field.) It was working fine this morning before I updated my phone. How can I fix this?

It's an issue with Yahoo... Deal with yahoo support to make sure you have the proper settings to connect your device to their service.

As per your query- what is IMAP (Incoming Mail server), actually it is a proper way to connect any mail account (as you have your Yahoo Mail account (web based)) to a desktop based mail client or mobile apps.
And it permits 2-way syncing, i.e. everything you do remotely is imitated in your email account (Yahoo Mail) within a network.

You can follow given steps-

IMAP Server setting-

-Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
-Port - 993
-Requires SSL - Yes

SMTP Server setting (Outgoing mail server)

-Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
-Port - 465 or 587
-Requires SSL - Yes
-Requires authentication - Yes

Fill your account information, as a format is given below-

-Fill your Email address
-Fill your Password
-Select Requires authentication - Yes
