what is a pass code and how do I get one ?

I was asked for the password to get into I-cloud and it accepted my password but then I was asked for a pass code ?

Sounds like two factor authentication is turned on for your Apple ID. When it came up it should have asked what device or number to send the code too. If you can't get to any of those device you will need to go to the Apple ID website and reset it. You will need your secret questions and answers to do that though.
