What is a good/free third party text messaging app I can put on a 12.9 inch ipad pro?

I am aware of the messaging capability on my ipad. But, it only allows me to send/receive text from Apple devices.

I always felt Kik was a toy app for kids, but that’s just me.

You mean iMessage? I use it daily to send messages to iOS and Android users.

Will this work if all they have is an iPad? iPads don’t have a cell number connected to it like an iPhone does.
