What have you found to be the best type of setting for Portrait Mode photos?

I have been taking photos with the depth effect, but I have had trouble getting the sharp contrast I want. Is it better to have a background that's farther away or closer? More or less busy?

Doesn't have to be Far. This is about 12" behind.

Thanks for this, a very nice photo! I had some visitors this weekend and we took several photos in the Boston metro area. Many great Portrait mode photos with many types of backgrounds! Also low light and live photos all worked well, so I've really enjoyed this camera so far!

One of my favorite depth effect photos I have taken. Not the sharpest since she moves quite a bit but the best one so far I have of her with depth effect.
